ALL OTHERS OUTNUMBER WHITES IN CALIFORNIA As more Latinos and Asians move into California, more and more whites are moving out - and whites now constitute less than half the population of the Golden State. The Census Bureau has released numbers for 1999 showing that the white population decreased by 7.8 percent since 1990 to around 16.5 million. The number of Latinos, Asian Americans, blacks and Native Americans rose to more than 17 million. Whites are still the largest ethnic group in California. The Latino population grew 35.8 percent in the '90s to 10.5 million. Asian/Pacific Islanders grew by 36.8 percent. Black and Native American/Alaskan Native populations grew by less than 10 percent. California is now home to 2.5 million blacks and 313,000 Native Americans. Census Bureau statistician Larry Sink told the Los Angeles Daily News whites are leaving California in larger numbers. He said, "Californians are fueling the boom we see in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Washington and Oregon."
